Hoodland Women’s Club Highlights

Sixty years ago, a group of women in the Hoodland area formed a service and social organization encompassing the Hoodland community from Alder Creek to Government Camp. The first official meeting of the Hoodland Women’s Club (HWC) was held December 2, 1963 at the Zig Zag Inn. Much of that meeting was dedicated to housekeeping issues, including review of the HWC constitution and bylaws. It was also then that planning for the first HWC fundraiser, a Sweetheart’s Ball on February 14, 1964 took place. HWC’s first president was Lou Stauffer. Officers were Wilda Strubel, Orpha Dudley, Rosemary Avery, Janet Hill and Emily Woodward. Annual dues were $10.
The HWC continued to raise funds through rummage and bake sales, Christmas bazaars, bed and breakfast tours, dinners, dances and the sale of cookbooks, calendars, notecards and mugs. Throughout 2024, this column will feature highlights of HWC’s 60 years pieced together by members Cathie Anderson and Nichole Watts.
Fast forward to December 2023 and HWC sponsored a holiday photo fundraiser with Josh Carlile and Jennifer Monahan representing Santa and Mrs. Claus, while children decorated cookies and drank hot cocoa. That event (along with the November and December HWC general meetings) also provided an opportunity to collect toys for children in the Hoodland communities. Social activities for members included “Bunco and Bubbles” on December 15 and wood ornament decorating on December 18. HWC plans monthly social activities as well as quarterly fundraising events in 2024.
The social calendar also includes a members’ only goal setting workshtop on Saturday, January 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at K & M Creations, 24403 E. Welches Road in Welches. Hosted by Luna & Craft, the workshop will reflect upon the past, organize the present and plan for the future. The $15 fee will include workbooks for each participant.
The HWC welcomes new members interested in getting to know others in the Hoodland area while supporting our Mountain communities. They can join throughout the year and can be either full-time or part-time residents of the Hoodland population. For more information, check out the Hoodland Women’s Club website (hoodlandwomensclub.org) or contact the club’s board members by emailing board@hoodlandwomensclub.org.
Those interested in HWC are also invited to check out the club at one of its general meetings. While those meetings are usually the first Monday of the month, this January is an exception. This month’s meeting will be Monday, January 8, at 11:30 a.m. at Camp Arrah Wanna in Welches. The $18 lunch includes vegetarian chili, chicken wild rice soup, bread/rolls and a salad bar. If you wish to attend and didn’t receive an evite, you can contact board members at the email address shown above.
