Grasshopper Fire closure area reduced, Timothy Lake reopens
Some areas around Mt. Hood remain closed due to nearby wildfire
(Sandy, OR, September 4, 2026) — The Mt. Hood National Forest has reduced the closure order for the Grasshopper Fire, just in time for Labor Day weekend. Due to improved containment and safer conditions along Oregon Route 35, some areas on the eastern side of the mountain are now accessible to the public.
Popular areas including Rock Creek Campground and Day Use Area, Timberline Trail, and Tamanawas Falls Trail have reopened. Areas that are still impacted by active wildfire remain closed: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/mthood/alerts/closure-place-grasshopper-fire
Portland General Electric has also reopened Timothy Lake, which was closed due to wildfires on Clackamas River Ranger District. The closure order for Austin Fire remains in place: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/mthood/alerts/clackamas-river-rd-fires
Staff continue to regularly evaluate wildfire closure boundaries and will reopen areas when it’s safe to do so. Portions of Barlow, Hood River, and Clackamas River Ranger Districts remain closed. Public entry in closed areas is prohibited for visitor safety and to allow firefighters and equipment operators to work efficiently.
Labor Day travelers should drive with caution near the Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Area, which continues to serve as the Grasshopper Fire’s main camp for fire personnel.
The Mt. Hood area received rain and cooler weather this week, which helped keep fire activity minimal. However, after a summer of drought, the moisture was not enough to fully saturate dry vegetation and soils. Although fall is approaching, the weather is expected to warm up and dry out over the coming days.
Campfires are currently prohibited. Fire restrictions are posted on the Mt. Hood National Forest website.
