In this the 60th year of Mt. Hood Community College, the school is celebrating by doing what they do best — connecting with their community.

On Friday, Oct. 30, all are welcome to the college’s Barney’s Boo Bash. From 5:30-8 p.m. community members and college staff will provide fun activities and hand out candy in the Main Mall of the campus.

The Boo Bash has been hosted at MHCC since 2018, and started as a trunk or treat event. Now it has been reformatted and brought under cover in the Main Mall.

This year’s event will feature a costume contest, opportunities to gather candy and have fun, and will also serve refreshments, such as apple cider, popcorn, and hot cocoa. The first 100 visitors will also receive a free pumpkin, purchased by the college from local Leipold Farms.

Barney poses with children at a previous Boo Bash event.

“Halloween is about celebrating to bring the spirit of fun,” said Director of Student Life and Civic Engagement Doctor Abio Ayeliya. “We want the community to know this is a space they can come to be together. People can come in, get candy, and just enjoy.”

Last year more than 900 people came through the Boo Bash, and Ayeliya is hoping for another successful event this October.

“We are a community college; MHCC is (the community’s) college,” Ayeliya explained. “These little things — like the Barney’s Boo Bash — they all celebrate the college.”

The Boo Bash includes many fall and Halloween staples: candy, popcorn, cider, cocoa, pumpkins and costumes.
