Summer Is for Kids to Be Kids
By Dr. Melanie Brown, For The Mountain Times
One of my favorite things about summer is watching kids be kids. They’re climbing trees, riding bikes, catching frogs, swimming, building forts, hiking, playing baseball, and staying outside until the porch lights come on. Their bodies are made to move, and movement is one of the greatest gifts we can give a growing child.
Of course, all that adventure comes with its share of twists, falls, and sore muscles. As a chiropractor, I see kids after bike crashes, awkward landings on the trampoline, rough tackles on the football field, and long weekends packed with hiking, camping, and sports tournaments. But not every problem comes from playing too hard. Spending hours gaming, scrolling on a phone, or hunching over a tablet can also contribute to headaches, neck pain, back stiffness, poor posture, and muscle tension. Sometimes parents simply notice that their child isn’t moving quite like themselves or doesn’t seem as comfortable as usual.
One of my favorite groups of patients is babies. Parents often bring them in because they’re fussy, seem uncomfortable, prefer looking one direction, have difficulty latching, or are dealing with constipation. Caring for newborns is one of the greatest joys of being a chiropractor. Gentle, restorative chiropractic care is incredibly well suited for babies and children, and it’s rewarding to watch them become more comfortable, move more freely, and get back to simply being happy kids.
For older kids and teenagers, summer is the perfect opportunity to work through those little issues that get pushed aside during the school year. Instead of juggling homework, practices, and busy schedules, families often have the time to address concerns and get kids feeling and moving their best. If a child is experiencing pain or other symptoms, they may benefit from a series of visits to restore healthy function. Once those issues have resolved, a maintenance plan of monthly care is a healthy way for growing kids — and adults — to maintain healthy movement, support active lifestyles, and catch little problems before they become bigger ones.
Young athletes especially benefit from taking care of their bodies during the off-season. Whether they’re training for football, soccer, dance, gymnastics, skiing, basketball, or another sport, chiropractic care supports healthy movement, flexibility, and recovery. If an injury happens, restoring healthy joint motion and function helps the body heal and gets athletes back to doing what they love.
My husband, fellow chiropractor, and co-owner of Mountain Life Clinic and Pure Life Clinic, Dr. Jason Brown, understands this firsthand. As a young football player, he injured his ankle and discovered chiropractic during his recovery. That experience changed the course of his life and inspired him to become a chiropractor. Today, helping young athletes recover from injuries and perform at their best is one of his greatest passions.
As parents, we’ve had all five of our boys under chiropractic care since their first day of life. Watching them grow into active young men who love sports, hiking, and the outdoors has only strengthened our belief that keeping the body moving well is one of the best investments we can make in a child’s health.
So let your kids be kids this summer. Let them climb, explore, ride bikes, swim, get dirty, and make memories. And if something seems off, don’t assume they’ll simply grow out of it. Whether it’s from sports, screen time, or everyday childhood adventures, helping children move well gives them the freedom to keep doing what they do best — being kids.
