SUMMERTIME AT THE SENIOR CENTER

SUMMERTIME AT THE SENIOR CENTER

By Laura Peterson, Executive Director, For The Mountain Times

We’re all enjoying another sunny summer with lots of activities!

The Strawberry Festival trip in Silverton was fun and delicious, a great way to kick off the season.  Another great day was had at the Lan Su Chinese Garden, a beautiful and peaceful spot in Portland.

Some upcoming trips in August include the Swan Island Dahlia Festival (August 7) and Senior Day at the Clackamas County Fair in Canby (August 19).  If you’re interested in coming along, please give us a call for details and to reserve your spot.

AUGUST 7 BLOOD DRIVE

The Red Cross will be here from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Friday, August 7. Give the gift of life! They will accommodate walk-ins if scheduling allows, but it’s best to make an appointment if you want to be sure to donate. They just sent an update: Blood is in shorter than usual supply, so they’re giving $20 Amazon gift cards to all donors. Visit redcross.org or call Laura at the Senior Center to set up an appointment. If you've never donated blood before, you might be surprised how good it feels to help save a life. It takes less than an hour, and the impact lasts far beyond that — one donation can help multiple patients all over the country, from accident victims to cancer patients to new moms facing complications. It’s very gratifying to get the notice from the Red Cross when your donation has been sent to someone in need.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST FUNDRAISER

Our friends at Mt Hood Deli & Sweets are generously sponsoring this event for us. Come join us Sunday, August 23 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. They’re located at the entrance to Mt Hood Village, directly across the street from us here at the Senior Center. There will be a variety of offerings, straight-up pancakes ($5 for two) or additional breakfast additions to suit your fancy. Also, we’ll be raffling off your choice of a Timberline or Mt Hood coverlet, not just beautiful but cozy too. Bring a friend and your appetite, we’ll see you there!

FARMERS MARKET RAFFLE

Speaking of our coverlets — most Saturdays we're excited to be raffling one off at the Farmers Market this year. Our friend Mike Martini has made space for us in his booth, Twig Town — thank you so much, Mike! He's been making one-of-a-kind Forest Furniture from locally gleaned wood right here in our community for over 40 years. You've likely seen some of his beautiful, unique creations around town. These days he's also making bird and bat houses. Come see for yourself on Saturdays! The market is open 10 a.m – 2 p.m. in the Mt Hood Village.
