The Mt. Hood Cultural Center & Museum (MHCCM) invites the public to attend its annual Steiner Cabins Tour on Saturday, August 8, 2026. This popular fundraising event offers a rare opportunity to visit five privately owned Steiner cabins and the former St. John Catholic Church built in 1937 by Henry Steiner. The self-guided driving tour is in Rhododendron.
Each year, the tour features a different selection of cabins built by master craftsman Henry Steiner and his family. Visitors will experience the unique architectural features that have made Steiner cabins iconic, including log doors, half-log staircases, handrails fashioned from bent tree limbs, and distinctive basalt fireplaces. Cabin owners will be on hand to share the history and special features of their homes.
Tickets go on sale July 1, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. Purchase them online at www.mthoodmuseum.org. With attendance limited to 300, the event traditionally sells out quickly.
The tour begins at the Alpine Events Center, 73365 U.S. Highway 26, Rhododendron. Please note it is not ADA accessible, children under age 12 and pets are not permitted, and refunds will not be issued.
Between 1927 and 1953, the Steiner family built approximately 100 cabins and two churches in the Mt. Hood area. About 84 of these structures remain today, many carefully preserved by private owners.
Proceeds from the Steiner Cabin Tour support the daily operations of the nonprofit Mt. Hood Cultural Center & Museum, which helps preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Mt. Hood region. For more information, visit www.mthoodmuseum.org.
