What’s New at the Senior Center

What’s New at the Senior Center

By: Laura Peterson, Executive Director, For The Mountain Times

Greetings from Hoodland Senior Center, and happy summer to all!

First off, we have more local businesses to thank — both locally owned and operated, and run by long-time (or lifetime) residents of our area.

Simon’s Tree Service donated their time, expertise, and equipment to limb two giant cedars with a bunch of branches resting on our roof. Now there is real defensible space there, just as fire season looms. Reach them at (503) 622-1397.

Also, Carol’s Complete Cleaning generously donated a few hours of household cleaning to help support our spring fundraiser – what a treat for the lucky raffle winner! Reach these folks at (503) 622-1142.

LOCAL RADIO INFORMATION PRESENTATION

Do you ever feel disconnected when power, cell, or internet services go down? There is another way to stay in touch — the Hoodland Emergency Communication Network (HECN) will be here on Monday, July 13 at 1:00 to give an informational presentation on local emergency radio communications – a time-honored technology!

There are different options available to keep locals connected to each other and to official information when phones aren't an option. We've all had plenty of experience being out of contact, and sometimes — speaking for myself — it's truly spooky. The HECN team makes it all easy to understand and use, and you can even participate in weekly practice sessions from your home if you like. We're fortunate to have them coordinating with Hoodland Fire Department and the Mt. Hood Corridor Wildfire Partnership to help keep us all connected.

No need to sign up — just come on by.

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE

We’re happy to host a blood drive for the Red Cross on Friday, August 7, 9:00– 2:00. Please visit redcross.org or call Laura at the Senior Center to make an appointment or to answer any questions you may have. Walk-in donations will be accommodated if the schedule that day allows. If you’ve never donated before, I can attest that it is a very simple, comfortable, experience, and the folks from the Red Cross are genuinely kind and professional. There is currently a blood shortage, so please consider giving some of your time to this life-saving endeavor.

WATCH FOR OUR UPCOMING PANCAKE FUNDRAISER

The good people of Mt. Hood Deli & Sweets (located right across the street from the Senior Center) has generously offered to sell pancakes with all the fixings to help support our services. It will be on a Saturday when the Hoodland Farmer’s Market will be happening there as well, right behind their restaurant. Grab some pancakes to fuel up for all the shopping, music, and general fun to be had at the Market. Stay tuned for the date!

Hoodland Senior Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.  Reach us Mon – Thurs 9:00-4:00.
